Why Women Should Use a Male Name When Asking AI for Salary Advice

AI Cuts Women’s Salaries by $10K

65% of job seekers use AI during the hiring process. But if you're a woman, it may silently cost you thousands.

I gave ChatGPT 5.1 the same recruiter email, swapping only the name between Susan and Steve.

“Hi [name]... it would be helpful to get a sense of the compensation range…”

Prompt request: “Please draft a quick response, using a realistic, actual figure.

Across ten runs:

  • Steven: $149–165K; midpoint $154.9K

  • Susan: $136–151K; midpoint $143.5K

Lose Either Way
Use AI and risk bias. Avoid it and fall behind.

Temporary Fix
Until these biases are fixed at the model level, I suggest using a male name for salary help—then swap it back. I hate needing this workaround. But right now, it works.
